The purpose of this classification is to perform entry-level work involving operation and maintenance of plant systems and related equipment for an assigned department/function, which involves wastewater treatment plant systems. This classification works under the close supervision of licensed operators and is intended to serve as a training position.
Assists in operating wastewater treatment plant equipment to maintain proper wastewater treatment and reuse water production. Examples of work performed under supervision of licensed operators includes; monitoring plant treatment process and reuse distribution system; monitor chemical levels; Collect samples for analysis, adjust chemical feeders as needed; adjust and monitor disinfectant feeds; monitor and record flows, pH, Chlorine residuals, Turbidity, Ammonia levels, aeration feed rates, odor control systems, screening devices, grit removal systems and security cameras. Test and record results of; microscopic organism counts, sludge settling characteristics, MLSS & RAS concentrations and clarifier sludge blanket levels. Perform cleaning procedures on plant equipment and buildings including; bar / fine screens, grit equipment, anoxic and aeration tanks, clarifiers, filters systems, chlorine contact tanks, buildings and exterior areas of the treatment facility. Requires mandatory shift work as facility operates 24/7/365, work shifts for this position include weekdays, evenings, midnights, weekend days and weekend nights.
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 2 months previous experience and/or training involving wastewater treatment plant operations, industrial cooling system operations, and/or equipment maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must obtain a Department of Environmental Protection Class “C” Wastewater Treatment Certificate within 2 years of appointment. May require possession and maintenance of a valid Florida driver’s license with any applicable endorsements and to maintain eligibility requirements and endorsement(s) to drive a County vehicle as provided in CMA 5805. Fingerprinting required.
