Laboratory Research Manager

The Division of Cardiac Surgery at the
University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a


Research Manager.

position will be focused on the management of the division’s translational
research with oversight of the animal research lab related to budgets; IACUC
protocol submission; plans experiments and experiment data collection; data
analysis; manuscript preparation; management of laboratory staff to include
training, scheduling, delegating work; assistance with grant preparation; and
contributes to the creation of new labs or expansion of existing labs.

The Division of
Cardiac Surgery is committed to the advancement, new technology and academic
exchange in the treatment of Cardiac Care. Our focus is to provide our patients
and our students with an extensive awareness of the research process and
advancements related to improved devices, current research and minimally
invasive techniques related to cardiac surgery. Our Division is committed to
innovation and experiments that will lead to changing current procedures and
techniques to minimally invasive and improved therapies while increasing
quality and patient care.

**This is a FULL-TIME, CONTRACTUAL position**

laboratory operations including the budget, ensuring quality control and safety
compliance, developing policies and procedures, and establishing lab goals and
objectives. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement
effective solutions.

Manage laboratory staff
including training, coordinating and delegating work, scheduling, monitoring
and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and
effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.

Oversee the
implementation of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Oversee study execution to
ensure adherence to division standard operating procedures (SOPs) for GLP and
Non-GLP, study/IACUC protocols, and sponsor requirements.

Regularly review raw data collected for
completeness and documentation errors. Document and investigate laboratory
deviations and unanticipated events; assist in identifying root cause and
implementing solutions per industry standards.

Establish and maintain database files,
perform required data extraction through programming, and reports on progress
of programs, studies, and/or projects. Duties include performing and/or
supervising data collection, ensuring data quality, analyzing data, and
interpreting findings.

Ensure all study supplies and equipment
are appropriately in place and functional according to applicable regulations,
guidelines, protocols, and procedures.

Assists PIs and
Administrators with drafting study protocols, budgets, and timelines. Assists
with grant writing and contract proposals, particularly as related to quality
assurances and controls per the GLP regulations.

Responsible for lab
inventory storage and maintenance. Maintain familiarity with the study and
IACUC protocols, including participating in writing and developing both.
Collaborate with internal and external partners. Participate as needed in
research projects and activities.

Assembles and assist with literature research,
editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer
graphics for publication.

Provide for
establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery
to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard
Operating Procedures for using new equipment.

and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research

Perform other related
duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or
field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Six (6) years of experience in laboratory
research including four (4) years in the relevant research specialization.

Two (2) years of direct supervision or
responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of

Preferred Education:
Master’s degree in
related field preferred.

Skills, and Abilities


Possess knowledge of

Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and documentation. Ability to understand
and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory. Comprehensive
knowledge of research techniques. Able to perform position in compliance with
all requirements, regulations, and laws.

Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues
related to laboratory activities. Ability to maintain high standards with the
work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences.

Ability to understand and utilize
scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both verbal and written
