Office of News & Communications (ONC), Duke University
Position reports to the executive director of global communications and is part of the Global Communications and Engagement group within ONC.
The global communications and engagement strategist is responsible for international promotion of Duke’s research, education, and service activities and achievements.
This position coordinates closely with colleagues at Duke, Duke Kunshan University (China) and Duke-NUS Medical School (Singapore) to expand and enhance Duke’s reputation internationally.
The network of communicators at Duke is several hundred strong, and this position interacts with colleagues across the University as well as those at peer universities to stay informed of new channels and opportunities in strategic communications and to incorporate new practices to increase the effectiveness of Duke’s global communications activity.
Global Communications and Media Relations (40%)
Implement Duke University’s global media relations strategy. Identify, develop and pitch stories about Duke people, research and programs that will appeal to international journalists and bloggers. Work closely with colleagues at Duke Kunshan University and Duke-NUS Medical School to identify and act on opportunities for shared media relations activity.
Collaborate with colleagues to respond to incoming requests from international journalists.
Manage programs to familiarize international journalists and bloggers with Duke research, expertise and educational programs. Identify new opportunities to build relationships with international journalists and bloggers.
Provide media relations strategy and support for senior leaders and faculty members traveling and working internationally.
Serve as a liaison to Duke Kunshan University and Duke-NUS Medical School with regards to communications planning and strategy, messaging, and project coordination.
Global Social Media (20%)
Serve as a member of Duke’s global social media team, overseeing channel strategy, content development, and evaluation for U.S. and internationally-based social media channels. Identify and evaluate new opportunities to expand the university’s global social media presence.
Guide Duke’s best practices and implementation of targeting by geography and language spoken on social platforms. Identify opportunities for segmenting Duke’s global audience and translating content into other languages.
Assist with leading discussions among colleagues and communicators across Duke to coordinate activities associated with global social media. Collaborate with Duke Kunshan University colleagues to support that university’s global social media work.
Assist with supervising and mentoring a team of students who manage Duke’s content on Chinese social media platforms.
University Engagement (20%)
Support efforts to build new channels for connecting Duke to external audiences by identifying and evaluating new opportunities.
Serve as an editor and content manager for Duke’s Medium channel.
Collaborate with Duke in DC office to identify, plan and execute Washington DC-based engagement featuring Duke faculty members and administrators.
University Brand and Reputation Management (20%)
Monitor international media and social media activity related to Duke, and distribute to university community members. Refine systems for tracking international coverage, and work with colleagues to integrate international media coverage into existing media reporting practices at Duke.
Use research and analytics to guide global communications and engagement strategy. Identify and analyze existing data to inform global media and reputation management activities, and support ONC market research and data collection efforts.
Participate in Duke’s reputation management team.
This position may require occasional domestic and international travel.
This position includes work that at times takes place after “standard” office hours and on weekends.
