This position is responsible for performing construction inspection, which includes assisting the project supervisor/engineer to determine and delegate work assignments; observing, checking, and performing construction activities interpreting road or bridge plans, may direct survey crews; prepare progress reports, providing communications with contractors to ensure procedures comply with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) standards and specifications. The Construction Project Inspector may perform as an assistant project supervisor/engineer or supervise a small project.

Acts as on-site inspector exercising due diligence in overseeing the operations of contractors, in order to ensure compliance with specifications. Performs entry-level inspection duties such as collecting delivery tickets, checking temperatures, checking paver speed, and more technical tasks associated with project inspection.
Checks for acceptable conformance of lines, grades, dimensions, and material requirements. Performs surveying, staking, plotting and computation of cross-sections. Operates a variety of testing equipment, such as concrete air and slump test equipment, sand cone compaction testers, dynamic cone penetrometers, and lightweight deflectometers. Makes concrete sample cylinders and beams for quality assurance (strength testing). Samples aggregate as well as in-place hot mix asphalt and submits samples to the Testing Department and/or the Office of Material Management. Communicates deficiencies to contractor and monitors corrective action
Completes a variety of daily and other periodic reports such as daily construction diaries, material records, and testing records using the SiteManager system. Provides input to Project Supervisors in order to assist them in dispute resolution and in consideration of change order and extra work requests.
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Applicant will primarily work in the field on construction jobsites and site visits will be required. There will be office type work as well in jobsite field offices.
Travel to and from work site. May be exposed to unpleasant weather conditions and high temperatures. May be required to work flexible hours based on project schedules.
