General Function:

Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Camp Counselor will be responsible for the safety of campers and assist in implementation of camp programs. The counselor’s interaction with campers and Y members will reflect the Y’s core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility.

Qualifications:

  • Must have or obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Must have at least 1 year experience working with children.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities:

  • Keep parents informed of activities at camp as noted by the Youth and Camp Director.
  • Obtain copies of the camp newsletter from the front desk and distribute to parents on a weekly basis.
  • Keep parents informed by distributing all correspondences from Youth and Camp Director or Counselors.
  • Responsible for the safety of campers as they arrive and depart camp including; constant supervision of campers, verifying numbers as they board the bus, and securing the area to ensure no child has been left behind.
  • Must meet the bus at the after camp location. Verify number of campers including checking that all campers are off the bus. Escort campers to their designated location.
  • Ensure camp care area is clean prior to camper’s arrival and after their departure each day.
  • Interact with campers at all times providing activity ideas and games.
  • Enforce camp rules and safety. Provide corrective action for negative behaviors effectively and efficiently per YMCA guidelines.
  • Educate parents on all camp policies and procedures including signing campers in and out each day. Inform parents of medication procedure and policy.

Dress Code:

Before & After Care Camp Counselors will wear appropriate, approved and identifiable attire so campers can visually recognize them as a Camp Counselor. Dress code will include professional athletic attire (No revealing clothing). Closed toed athletic shoes must be worn at all times.

Required education:

  • High school or equivalent

Required experience:

  • childcare: 1 year
